HIROSHIMA, Japan — Mazda Motor Corporation has announced an update to the Mazda CX-5, a SUV model that accounts for approximately one-third of the company’s global unit sales, the global roll out of the update will begin in the latter half of 2021.
The first-generation Mazda CX-5 debuted in 2011 and had a full model change in 2017. The combined sales of these two generations have totalled more than three million units worldwide to date and won the hearts of many customers.
This major update includes improvements to the design, dynamics performance, utility and convenience elements of the CX-5 and produces a greater sense of quality, both in appearance and the driving experience.
The latest iteration of Mazda’s Kodo design language is incorporated to add yet greater depth to its unique expression, achieving a balance between functionality and beautiful form. Focusing on the front and rear ends, the updated design adds a heightened sense of SUV toughness to the refined solid mass of the CX-5 body.
The front grille gains a new design. The signature wing, a distinctive body trim that extends outward from the front grille, adopts a new design that features surface forms rather than lines to assume the look of a sturdy frame and convey the tough stature of the updated CX-5.
In terms of driving dynamics, the updated CX-5 adopts the latest SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architecture philosophy that was introduced on the current Mazda3. The aim is to realize dynamic performance that reduces fatigue, even during long trips. Evolving the body, suspension and seats, makes driving the updated CX-5 feel more natural and stress-free and inspires you to keep driving for as long as possible whilst providing quality and ride comfort that inspires you to go out and explore as far as you can.
With the update on the cargo area, the development team eliminated the height difference between the cargo area floor and the tailgate sill. Not only does this flat entranceway make loading and unloading of heavy cargo far easier, it also secures an even wider flat space when the rear seat is folded down.
Other improvements implemented to improve comfort and the quality of the ride include changes to the suspension’s damping characteristics and spring settings. Road noise has been greatly reduced to achieve a level of quietness that would allow cabin occupants to enjoy conversation with one another regardless of the car’s travelling speed or road surface.
More information on specific elements of the facelift and improvements to each CX-5 variant for the SA market will be shared closer to the launch of the updated Mazda CX-5.
